Staphylinid beetles as bioindicators

نویسنده

چکیده

The family Staphylinidae is one of the largest beetle families and is distributed worldwide in almost all types of ecosystems. The morpho-ecological characteristics of staphylinid beetle adults and developmental stages are summarized, and features pertaining to their potential use as bioindicators are highlighted. Methods of study and practical examples are given for the application of staphylinids as bioindicators both in seminatural and cultural landscapes. The structure of staphylinid communities in biotopes with various management practices is described. Future refinements in identification and sampling methods should result in increased use of staphylinids as bioindicators, possibly in combination with studies of other insects competing for the same resources. ©1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Species composition and zoogeography of the rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) of raised bogs of Belarus

A review of Staphylinidae known from peat bogs of Belarus is presented with data on their distribution at various sites. The staphylinid fauna, as reported here, includes 66 species, 33 genera, and 10 subfamilies. The results showed a low species richness of rove beetles and a high occurrence of a small number of species. The regional zoogeography and composition of rove beetles in the Belarusi...

Organic versus conventional arable farming systems: Functional grouping helps understand staphylinid response

The response of different feeding groups of staphylinid beetles to organic management, distance to perennial boundary and landscape context was studied in 42 paired organic and conventional winter wheat fields. Management effects were found to strongly depend on feeding group. While the activity-density of predators was higher in the conventional fields, both activity-density and species richne...

Present taxonomic work on Staphylinidae (Coleoptera) in Canada: progress against all odds

The Staphylinidae or rove beetles represent one of the largest evolutionary radiations on earth with more than 56,000 species (Grebennikov and Newton 2009, Ślipiński et al. 2011) and are a dominant element of the insect fauna in many terrestrial ecosystems (examples discussed in Thayer 2005). Even though such an enormous diversity may seem unmanageable, we are living in an exciting time for tax...

Iridoid biosynthesis in staphylinid rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae, Philonthinae).

The biosynthesis of chrysomelidial and plagiodial was studied in the rove beetle subtribe Philonthina (Staphylinidae). Glandular homogenates were found to convert synthetic (2E,6E)-[trideuteromethyl-5,5-(2)H(5)]octa-2,6-diene-1,8-diol (10) into nor-chrysomelidial (14) and nor-plagiodial (13). The overall transformation requires; i) oxidation of the substrate at C(1) and C(8), ii) cyclization of...
